Rubber Duck Proposal
We met our Sophomore year of college and were friends and study buddies before we started dating. During one study session Kelsey asked Chris to be her “rubber duck” as she worked through her coding error.
“Rubber duck debugging (or rubberducking) is a debugging technique wherein a programmer explains their code, step by step, in natural language aloud to something, like a rubber duck. The idea is that verbalizing your work can help reveal mistakes and misunderstandings.”
Once we started dating we became each other’s rubber ducks for homework assignments and day-to-day issues. Rubberducking turns out to be a pretty good communication technique.
Chris carried on the rubber duck theme by organizing a campus wide scavenger hunt with the help of our friends. He hid rubber ducks all over campus for Kelsey to find with a grand surprise at the end.
Years later, when Chris was planning to propose he decided that a little rubber duck should be included. He bought a rubber duck, hired a calligrapher and had them write the message “Will you marry me?” on the bottom. Chris then mailed the little duck to an engagement photographer he hired in Canada. He worked with the photographer to hide the duck in advance in a place where Kelsey could find it and the photographer could capture photos.
Weeks later, Kelsey and Chris were up in Victoria, Canada to celebrate Kelsey’s Birthday. They had dinner reservations and decided to walk through the nearby park beforehand. As they were walking through the park, Kelsey saw a little rubber duck under a tree. As she went to pick it up Chris knelt down to propose.
